PLAY@Punggol winning design: Flora and Fauna Kinetics Playscape (ura.gov.sg)
The Brief
In this project, we recognize the significant impact of public spaces in connecting people and their surroundings. Through innovative installations, our goal is to encourage interactions among the public, elevate their experiences in these spaces, and proudly represent the unique identity of Punggol. Designers play a crucial role in shaping our urban environment, especially with a pipeline of developments ahead. The Play @ Punggol design competition is an opportunity for practising designers to contribute to the design and activation of public spaces in Singapore.
The installations will be strategically placed at three distinct locations along the waterway, drawing inspiration from Punggol's enchanting flora, fauna, and rich history. Crafted with recycled wood logs, the designs aim to bring delight, foster a sense of play, and strengthen community bonds. Expect these installations to be a delightful addition to the landscape, enhancing public spaces for at least three years.
Jury Citation
“The proposal is visually striking as the design encompasses the various forms of flora and fauna in Punggol. The element of kinetic play provides a dynamic and engaging experience that encourages physical activity, creativity, and social interaction for visitors. Designed to be lightweight and visually porous, the installation meaningfully showcases the use of wood and responds well to the site.

Designed to delight young and old, this simple yet captivating playscape invites visitors to imagine, play, and come together in a shared experience the Flora Kinetics Playscape is inspired by the vibrant wildlife species residing in the floating wetland system and freshwater-tolerant mangrove of Waterway@Punggol. From bees and dragonflies to butterflies, the playscape has been designed to capture the essence of these creatures and bring their magic to life.
Harnessing the magic of light, this immersive playscape creates a dynamic and visually stunning environment that immerses visitors in the natural world around them. At the heart of this project are the recycled logs that form the main hero of the playscape. These logs are transformed into decorative posts featuring unique creature wing patterns, planter boxes, seating areas, and plant climbing columns.
